Refugee from Katrina, I am now retired and writing in the South, but no longer New Orleans. I have sought higher ground. I am old and a bit worn. In my youth I was a liberal (Jack Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey), in my middle years I was a conservative, in my old age I am pragmatic. I would know the truth. Man is a complicated creature, and I am no different. To give an example: I don't believe in torture. Yet to save a child, I would gladly torture. I would not let a child die to save a principle.
